Over a ten-year period in my early life, I attended twelve different schools. Sometimes my mom commented that we kids had every excuse to be bad. And there is some truth to that based on a test that indicates if a child had endured more than ten traumas in early life, it may lead them down the wrong path of underdevelopment and rebellion. Well, my siblings and I checked a lot of those boxes in that test including divorce, suicide, and for me, changing schools often, and experiencing sexual abuse. Nevertheless, I was not allowed to use any of those excuses to make bad decisions, or to get into trouble. Instead, I developed ways to heal and cope through my faith in God, trusting that the path before me was divinely inspired. That’s what this story is about.
Growing up in a family that moved a lot espcially during my early years. My dad was a salesman and we moved a great deal before I was four years old. Then after three kids in those years, my parents decided to go their separate ways. In 1972, my mom married my stepdad who served in the U.S. Coast Guard and we moved every few years resulting in my attending 12 different schools from K5-10th grade.
Kerri began her career in credit unions in 1987 not even knowing what a credit union was at the time. Little did she know that credit unions would provide her the opportunity to work in or for fifty credit unions in the United States and in six countries. She has collaborated and led projects for five regional, national and international credit union associations. The credit union philosophy of "people helping people" is fundamental to her personal mission.
